Due to an unusually warm winter ticks can be seen much earlier this season. It is important to prevent tick bites by using protection which contains deet. If you should get bit by a tick you need to know what to do. Wash your hands and area of which you see the tick. Do not use petroleum jellies, nail polish or a hot match to remove ticks. To remove the tick you need to get as close to the skin as possible. This can be made easier by flipping the tick on its back so you can use your tweezers to pinch the tick close to the skin. Using moderate pressure pull tick straight out. Do not twist or crush the tick because this could cause part of the tick to be left in. That could cause infection and inflammation at the site. After removing the tick wash area and apply antibiotic ointment to the area. Monitor site for redness, swelling, pus, warmth and pain from area. Seek medical attention if any signs exist.
